2020 Employment Law Changes
As the calendar turns to 2020, California has gone live with a number of new laws voted in as bills or ballot initiatives. Some are facing judicial challenges, the outcome of which will determine the nature of their final implementation.
Wage Theft in California
“Stealing earned wages from workers’ pockets is illegal in California and this case shows that employers who steal from their workers will end up paying for it in the end,” Julie Su, head of the state’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency, said in a press release announcing nearly $12 million in citations against RDV Construction, Inc.
Minimum Wage in Sacramento, California
SACRAMENTO, CA – After an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD), Darshan Mundy – owner of seven Sacramento, California-area gas stations – has paid $340,470 in back wages and damages to 105 employees and $45,963 in penalties to resolve violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime requirements.
Border Warehouse Company To Pay Back Wages
SAN DIEGO, CA – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division has reached a settlement with G-Global – a border warehousing company in Otay Mesa, California – in which the employer will pay 61 Mexican national employees $124,465 after investigators found the company paid the workers below minimum wage in pesos, a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
ACLU of Southern California Sued
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A black former attorney for the ACLU of Southern California is suing the organization for allegedly subjecting her to racism and wrongfully firing her in February for speaking out against her treatment, labeling her as an “angry” woman.
